It's hard to keep from writing you a book on each day's topic.

If you'll diligently follow these Lessons you'll become successful faster than I did because you won't have to figure it all out by trial and error.

Most people who have traded for any period of time develop a major problem which becomes like an anchor on their ability to progress and improve.

The losses they took while learning to trade morph into huge mental handicaps to their future success.

If you could wave a magic wand and erase memories of these losses from your subconscious, then act on what you have learned since beginning a study program, trading would be so much easier.

Well, you and I know there is no magic way to easily forget mistakes of the past, but there are ways to keep you on the straight and narrow path in the future.
It's similar to when I learned to drive.

I was 16 years old.

After passing the test my Dad let me drive the car to the supermarket. I don't remember the elation of the freedom of being on my own.

What I remember is the heavy concern that maybe I pulled in front of someone I didn't see, or committed some other gross driving error.

Yet, today I can drive for several hours to visit friends and relatives and not even remember 10 minutes of the whole trip.

I don't remember specific street lights, or intersections.

In fact, I remember almost nothing! It's as though I wasn't even at the wheel.

How can I do that?

The same way you do it I'll bet.

We're on auto-pilot.

We've driven so much that we don't even need to think about it any longer.

Here's a quote worth considering:

"Habits are safer than rules; you don't have to watch them.

And you don't have to keep them, either. They keep you". Frank Crane

Habits are safer than rules... they will keep you? This means habits can be powerful allies.

Certainly it explains why we can drive or do a number of other things without thinking about it.

On the road, our good driving habits keep us safe.

Can you see how this relates to trading?

All of us are subject to the unrelenting dictates of the habits we've developed over the years.

Some of these are good, hopefully like our driving habits.

Many are bad, such as smoking.

All of them are unconscious.

The key we're looking for is how we switch on good habits in our trading, and what those good trading habits are.

Put Your Success on Auto-Pilot

By Making Trading a Habit

One of the most important concepts I have ever come across is the concept of "How We Learn New Skills".

Learning can be described as a four step process.

You can think of the process as a ladder and you may want to invert the following explanations so you can visualize it (Stage 1 is the first step of the ladder).

Unconscious Incompetence: You Don't Know What You Don't Know! Your first attempts at trading fail. It looked so easy!

Conscious Incompetence: You Know That You Don't Know! The search for the "Holy Grail of Trading" begins.

That mechanical system that looked too good to be true failed.

So did the newsletter and the chat room.

Then you begin to learn for yourself.

Conscious Competence: You Know That You Know!

You finally learn an approach well enough to make some money.

Unconscious Competence: You Don't Know That You Know! You are "Trading in the zone" and do it automatically and effortlessly (auto pilot at last).

Clearly, your goal is to create the shortcuts you need to get to stages three and four as quickly as possible.

Here are several Lessons that helped me solidify my "vision" of how to execute a winning trading approach.

Your mind can be programmed to "hard wire" action patterns through repetition, if that repetition is consistent.

For example, if you keep your charting program set constantly to the same colors, same indicators and same setup, you will have much more consistent success than if you change things constantly (the programming has to start over).

It may take up to 50,000 repetitions to totally automate a response.

Think this is a lot? Don't be discouraged. Think of professional athletes and their practice routine.

You can also look at other routines in your own life to see how you made the transition to step four in any of your competencies.

Some authorities say that after 30 days a new habit has begun to be formed.

Using a SimBroker and monitoring your progress on win-loss ratios, profitability and consistency is one way to solidify recognition and action using your signals.

Practicing good money management in this practice session will help you automate your own system.

When you do finally trade with your own funds, you will have mastered and automated two thirds of the equation. Your final goal will be to master your emotions.

Here is a technique that took me awhile to master, called time of day trading.

Coupled with indicators, you will have great success.

In the Futures Trading Secrets System I list six specific time of day trades to be aware of.

Apply these principles.

Be a better trader and learn your craft before risking your money on live trades.

Welcome back to your 12 step journey toward Futures Trading Success!

Today's Futures Trading Secrets Tip is "Beware the Mob Mentality of the Market". It deals with a subject often dismissed as irrelevant by a large majority of those in the world of trading. But, that's OK. Let them. That's part of why that same majority fails to make money at trading.

As far as they are concerned, the stuff we're going to talk about today is too "mushy brained". You can't put it in a box or dissect it and analyze it. If it doesn't have hard numbers attached to it, they think it can't be too significant.

Well, that's where they're wrong.

I know. And the reason I know is because I used to think just like them.

With a background that includes engineering, physics, astronomy and venture capital. I've always felt better dealing with concrete facts. Give me the data and a slide rule (oops...guess that gives away my early training days. Now, of course, I only use the fastest computers available) and I could figure out anything you needed.

But as I tackled the world of trading I quickly came to understand that it was more than just numbers. It was something you couldn't see or put your finger on. It was intangible yet very real, and showed up in the middle of every human venture.

In fact, this almost ghostly apparition can be seen at work in lots of places. It's what makes one sports team into a winner while another team with equal ability becomes a loser. You can especially see its handiwork in crowds where mass hysteria reigns.

As I discuss today's topic, remember we are in control of our destiny. Once we are aware of the forces that surround us, we can choose to master those forces and use them to our advantage.

Beware the Mob Mentality of the Market

We humans are emotionally driven.

As advanced and sophisticated as we may like to think of ourselves, all it takes is one wrong word spoken to us carelessly and we can go into a tailspin of anguish that'll poison our attitude and taint our conversations for days or even weeks.

When it comes to the market, this can be uncontrollably exaggerated by the collective psychology of the mob. In other words, the individual feelings of an average investor regarding a whole host of events such as the economy, business, and politics becomes multiplied times a million other investors who are emotional fire storms waiting to ignite.

Like the forest fires we see on the news in some of the western states, once the blaze gets started about all you can do is try to stay out of its way.

In other words, the market is 90% driven by a mass psychology and there is no reasoning with it. This emotional and psychological ingredient has absolutely nothing to do with the true state of the economy.

In fact, rumors are often the prime movers which cause a roller coaster drop in the market. Just the speculation of upcoming events can create havoc. Mention the word inflation and invariably investors rush for the exits.

This mass fear leads to a market decline long before we see the economy actually change. Indeed, what the market does - if we're alert enough to notice - is flash an early warning sign of what we can expect in regard to corporate health, unemployment, interest rates and other financial trends.

Let's Talk About You...

You're probably thinking, "Yeah, all this is true, but I'm in this crowd of people you describe. How can this help me?"

First of all, when you recognize there is a problem you have taken the first step to solving it.

The two biggest driving forces of human emotions are fear and greed.

Fear often comes from the unknown. We don't know what's going to happen in a situation so we're fearful of a bad outcome. Or we're fearful we may have made a bad decision. On the tail of that is the fear of loss.

Yet all of these fears can be conquered simply through preparation.

In the Futures Trading Secrets Course I emphasize again and again the necessity to prepare. Read the material. Study the charts. Practice on paper first before using live money. When you do that you'll discover your strength of mind begins to increase. Pretty soon, you're making decisions and "pulling the trigger" because you've become the master of your craft.

You're in control - no longer subject to the whiplash of emotional panics.

On the other hand, there is the problem of over-reaching and greed.

Most traders expect too much from themselves initially. Setting outrageous goals is more harmful than anything you can do. Trying to make $1 million on a $10,000 account in one year does nothing more than verify you are in the clutches of greed.

Greed is deceptive. It clouds your mind with illusions of greatness. You begin to turn a deaf ear to your mentors when they exhort you to be cautious. You're in a state of denial.

Over trading
Taking too much risk for your account size
The false confidence that every trade will be a winner

Of course, it goes without saying, disaster becomes the final result.

Consider the example of Sam Walton, the founder of Walmart.

Though he was a multi-billionaire, he drove the same old pickup truck he'd always owned. Even in his later years he still found great pleasure in working the cash register at one of his stores. He always flew coach.

He learned to control money instead of money controlling him.

Then there's Warren Buffet, one of the richest men in the world.

He owns some of the same stocks he's had since he first started - over 30 years. He still lives in the same house he purchased in 1965 for $35,000. He never makes a stock buy or sell without a lot of research and preparation. He ignores the whimsical psychology of the market.

What about you? Will you accept my advice and become master of your own destiny? Or will you succumb to the mass frenzy of the market and sabotage your own efforts?

Here's what I recommend:

Start out trading one contract until you have confidence in your rules based system.
Develop the self discipline to trade until you reach a net two points for the day then stop. This approach will develop confidence in your system, give you some profit every day and teach you how to recognize your signals.

Later you can trade larger, but initially you must learn the discipline and patience to only take the high probability signals outlined in my course.
